China Commemorates World Year of Physics
2005-04-18

A prominent Chinese physicist said Friday that science strategists in China need to analyze Albert Einstein's successes to stimulate more talent among young Chinese scientists.

Zhou Guangzhao, president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), said Einstein laid the theoretic basis for modern physics with his theories of special and general relativity.

Einstein's historic contributions to physics was significant to not only basic research, but also technological advancement, Zhou said at a commemoration organized here Friday by the CAST and other organizations.

In 1905, the 26-year-old Einstein published five ground-breaking papers on relativity and quantum mechanics, which greatly advanced physics research around the world. The year of 1905 was thus called the miracle year of Einstein.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a proposal to name 2005 as the World Year of Physics.
