BY APPLYING TO BECOME A CANDIDATE in the CIA program, an individual agrees to accept the conditions of the program. These include requirements regarding eligibility, exam confidentiality, ethics, and continuing professional development, along with other conditions enacted by The IIA’s Board of Regents or Certification Department.
EDUCATION — CIA candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college-level institution. a copy of the candidate’s diploma, transcripts, or other written proof of completion of a degree program must accompany the candidate’s application. With the exception of full-time undergraduate degree students in their senior year, candidates will not be allowed to sit for the exam until the educational requirement is met. Students please see special instructions.
EQUIVALENCY — To allow adequate consideration for cultural and societal differences around the world, IIA national institutes and chapters have been given the authority to recommend educational and experience criteria for their countries. In addition, certain international professional designations (such as Chartered Accountant) may be accepted as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
Work experience will not substitute for an appropriate degree. Educational performance may be taken into account when a nondegree candidate has completed more than 90 percent of the academic requirements needed for a degree (in the United States, approximately 120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours of degree credits at an accredited college-level institution).
Applicants who do not possess a bachelor’s degree and who are unsure whether their educational achievements or professional designation qualify as equivalents should submit related educational/professional information with their application and include a cover letter requesting review by the Board of Regents. Information submitted should be sufficiently detailed to enable the Board of Regents to determine equivalency. Applicants for equivalency may be registered for the exam pending review but should expect a separate letter regarding the outcome of the review. Applicants who do not receive an equivalency status letter within four weeks of submission of the application and equivalency request should contact The IIA immediately to verify their eligibility.
Note: The Board of Regents is the final judge of the acceptability of professional or educational attainment offered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree and of equivalents offered for consideration as work experience.
CHARACTER REFERENCE — CIA candidates must exhibit high moral and professional character and must submit a character reference from a responsible person such as a CIA, supervisor, manager, or educator . The character reference must accompany the candidate's application.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE — CIA candidates are required to complete 24 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent. Equivalent experience means experience in audit/assessment disciplines, including external auditing, quality assurance, compliance, and internal control. Either a master's degree or work experience in related business professions (such as accounting, law, or finance) can be substituted for one year of experience. Work experience must be verified by a CIA or the candidate's supervisor. Experience verification may accompany the candidate's application or be submitted later when criteria have been met. However, prompt submission of experience verification will expedite processing of the candidate's certification once the candidate has passed the exam. Candidates may sit for the CIA exam prior to satisfying their experience requirement, but they will not be certified until the experience requirement has been met.
CONFIDENTIALITY — The CIA exam is a nondisclosed examination. Candidates in the CIA program agree to keep the contents of the CIA exam confidential and therefore may not discuss the specific exam content with anyone except The IIA's Certification Department. Unauthorized disclosure of exam material will be considered a breach of the Code of Ethics and could result in disqualification of the candidate or other appropriate censure.
ETHICS — CIAs agree to abide by the Code of Ethics established by The IIA.
