The 20th anniversary of IELTS has seen this international testing system provide a platform for talented Chinese people to realize their dreams both at home and abroad for twenty years. James Shipton, Director for IELTS China said: “We already see the large demand for IELTS in China. IELTS is helping more and more candidates realise their dreams, opening doors to overseas study, immigration and career development while providing the most proven authoritative certificate of English language proficiency.” According to figures provided by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, in 2009, over 300,000 candidates took IELTS, and the year on year growth figures continue to be in double digits.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the organisers of IELTS have launched a range of extra benefits for candidates. The IELTS Chinese language website www.chinaielts.org was launched to offer the latest news and information about IELTS for candidates in China. About the same time, the online learning course ‘Road to IELTS’, which offers 30 hours exam preparation material for every registered IELTS candidate, was launched as a free added-value service for Chinese candidates. Meanwhile, in order to better meet the growing demand of the candidates and serve the candidates, four new test centres were opened in 2009 in Shanghai, Hohhot, Shijiazhuang and Nanchang. IELTS test centres cover the main provincial capital cities nationally. There will be 48 test dates in 2010. The test will be held at 35 test centres in 32 cities nationally, bringing more choice and convenience to candidates. Candidates in China can register for the IELTS test via the NEEA Registration website http://ielts.etest.edu.cn and view the test schedule for all China test centres.
With the increasing demand of the US bound students in China, the campaign “IELTS Your Smoother Trip to America” was launched in 2009 to open another door for Chinese candidates to realize their dreams to study in the USA. By September 2009, over 2100 US institutions had recognised IELTS results including many top institutions favoured by Chinese students and the eight ‘Ivy league’ schools. Candidates can log on to www.chinaielts.org/usa for more information.
On the 20th anniversary of IELTS entering China, as a communicative test, IELTS has been recognised world-wide as a high quality English test, and emerged as the undisputed leader in English Language testing for overseas study or immigration purposes in China. In order to satisfy the burgeoning demand for IELTS, the organisers will focus on candidate demand and changes in the market, adopt different initiatives to provide additional convenience for the candidates’ registration and tests, and continue providing the Chinese candidates more convenient and better services.
