　　The NBA is currently under a lockout, that began on July 1, 2011, after the previous collective bargaining agreement expired. The league's owners and players had been negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement up until June 30, 2011, but the two sides remained too far apart on terms, resulting in the owners locking out the players. It is the third major work stoppage in NBA history.

　　As the previous collective bargaining agreement is set to expire, NBA owners have said that the majority of them are losing money, so in the new agreement players need to agree to concessions that will allow the owners to continue to maintain their teams. Players have countered that the league is setting records with TV and ticket revenue, and only a few teams are losing money.

The league says those exceptions have led to player salaries that are too high, resulting in those huge losses. The owners are looking for cost certainty out of the next collective bargaining agreement, which they want to put in place for the next 10 years. The players are looking to protect their percentage of the league's basketball-related income (BRI) and want a shorter agreement.
