翻译是对任何形式的语言信息转变的概括，而翻译又分为笔译（即笔头翻译）及口译（口头翻译）。其次，口译分为“同声传译”（Simultaneous interpreting，简称“同传”，又称“同声翻译”、“同步口译”）和“交替传译”（Consecutive interpreting，简称“交传”），二者不同之处在于同传是指同声传译员通过专用的设备，在不打断讲话者讲话的情况下，不间断地将内容口译给听众的一种翻译方式，而交传则是指等待发言者讲话结束后单独进行口头翻译，比“同声传译”所需时间要长一些。 所以其实同传学习只是口译学习的一部分，所有开设同传的英国大学都会教授交传，因此这个专业都总称为口译，而并不只是同传或是交传。
