Bruce Coggles

Bruce has held many positions with Edmonton Public Schools. He has been a school-based leader and a district administrator. Of note was the 12 years Mr Coggles was principal of Jasper Place High School.

Under his leadership, Jasper Place School was recognized as the top overall high school in Canada. He has received a number of awards and recognitions as a school administrator - from the Canadian School Administrators' Association, from the Alberta Government, from Community Agencies and from the Education Faculty at the University of Alberta. His work was featured in a book "Making Schools Work" by Dr. Ouchi from the Business School at UCLA. Bruce currently holds the position of Assistant Superintendent in a district of 200 schools with responsibility for supervising Principal performance.Bruce attended the last two Jiangsu Principal Forums in Wuxi and Changzhou and serves on the Forum committee.

Edmonton Public Schools operates 200 schools, educating 80,000 students from Kindergarten to grade 12.

The district is recognized as the most progressive in Canada and a leader in North America. Innovations that have been pioneered include open boundaries, programs of choice, site-based decision making, inclusion of special needs students, and cost recovery services. Educators from all over the world visit Edmonton to observe the district in action and learn how these innovations contribute to student learning. One of the very strong programs in Edmonton is Second Language instruction. Last year the district was awarded a Confucious Institute to support the Chinese language programs. Representatives from the Communications University of China came to Edmonton for the signing. Edmonton has entered into a partnership with Hanban and agencies from several other countries to provide support in the develiopment of second language curriculum materials.
