Traffic congestion and pollution caused by an increasing number of vehicles have long been pressing problems in modern society,which have frustrated and exhausted governments all over the world.Although there is a popular opinion that raising the fuel price is the best solution to solve these two problems,I would say that there is no panacea to cure all the ills while other options are available too.

Granted,a higher price of petrol might help constrain the usage of private cars,thus reducing emissions to some extent.However,such an approach does not work with other vehicles,like buses and long distance coaches,which will not be inhibited by the price of energy.As a consequence,instead of the improvement in air quality,what is ensued will be an increasing expenditure in traffic.

From this consideration,multiple measures are definitely what we need to tackle the congestion and pollution.The first solution that comes to my mind is building the subway system.Powered by energy and running underground,the subway seems to be a good alternative to its fuel-powered counterparts on the road.

Also,for those who do not have easy access to subway stations,the bicycle should have its role to play for these people,another eco-friendly transport which neither emit waste fumes nor cause traffic jams.

From what has been discussed above,helpful though it is,increasing the price of petrol does not seems to be a silver bullet to curb the traffic and pollution problems.I would say,alternatively,the construction of subway system and the promotion of bicycles should play their parts in tackling these issues.
