Many people are afraid to leave their homes because of their fear of crime. Some believe that more action should be taken to prevent crime, but others feel that little can be done. What is your opinion?很多人害怕出门，因为他们害怕犯罪。一些人认为我们应该采取更多的行动来预防犯罪，而另外一些人觉得可以做的事不多。你的观点是什么?

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are scared to leave their homes alone due to crimes. Some people argue that regardless of what measures have been taken to struggle against thieves or robberies, the crime rate cannot be lowered substantially, while others contend that anti-crime action is capable of preventing people’s lives and properties from being threatened by criminals. Personally, I am in favor of the latter view.

Convincing arguments can be made that taking effective measures brings numerous merits to the protection of properties. To start with, adopting safeguard procedures in advance, such as installing safeguard doors, are conducive to deterring potential criminals. Apart from serving as a facility to prevent homes from being stolen and robbed, safeguard measures are more likely to play a practical role in indicating criminals that hosts have taken precautions against crime. Moreover, even if the house is being invaded by law offenders, the pre-installed equipment, for instance alarm device, can inform policemen to arrive at the crime scene immediately right after they receive the notification. Lastly, implementing necessary guard action can offer a sense of security to people when they are out of their apartments. It is obvious that people can be easily distracted, if they are always anxious about whether their homes are or have suffered from illegal invasion.

However, we cannot deny the fact that the existing measures may carry potential drawbacks. A reason for this is that a large number of security devices are criticized for the sake of low quality and they can be broken through readily. It is remarkable that last year, over 200 types of safety anti-thief systems were identified and exposed due to the inferior quality and their sponsor manufacturers are penalized accordingly.

In summary, I concede that taking action cannot fully guarantee that people’s houses are able to escape from being intruded by criminals. Despite that, the advantages created by the measures far outweigh the adverse impact. Overall, I am convinced that people should strengthen their awareness of security and in the meantime governments should issue relevant laws to supervise the quality of security systems.

The most important reason can be that words enable readers to picture what they read and there is no restriction for such imaginative thinking. In addition, readers are allowed to pause, and reflect on the part that they like or they do not have a clear understanding of. Reading is also an effective way of improving written language skills. This is proven by the phenomenon that children who like reading at an early age tend to have a higher level of literacy and read faster than those who often watch TV.

Certainly watching TV has certain advantages for people to be more creative and expressive. TV programs are usually presented in verbal languages and therefore the watchers are encouraged to express themselves orally. They tend to speak faster and clearer and have a larger vocabulary in the context of popular culture. Of course, TV watchers can also speculate the plot of a TV drama, but the more pictures and sounds to offer, the more limits on imagination as they are presented in such a way that there is little need for the watchers to use their brain actively. Another irrefutable proof can be the great ancient philosophers, ideologists and litterateurs who lived prior to the creation of TV sets but by no means lacked brilliant abstract thinking and expressing skills.

My personal view is that people should be encouraged to read books rather than watch TV. The reasons include that books allow more freedom for readers to imagine and inspire deeper understanding of written material. Watch TV can also be utilized to cultivate these faculties to some extent but in a less effective way.

Watching TV has always been an important part of after school life for children, and some of them even become TV addicts. Therefore some people advocate ‘no TV for children’.

Of course this is understandable. Firstly, children sitting too much time in front of a screen tend to have poor eyesight and weak body due to lack of physical exercise. They can also be lost in the virtual world and be insensitive to people around them, including their parents, and this is detrimental to their family relationship and their emotional development. Another concern is about their mental development which needs various types of interactive activities, but obviously excessive TV viewing cannot meet such requirement. The worst part can be some programs which are not proper for children to watch. Too many advertisements and news focusing on emergency and disasters on the screen are also a disadvantageous point for immature people who are prone to be influenced negatively.

However watching TV in moderation with proper parental supervision can be good for children. There are plenty of educational programs which can expand children’s knowledge and spark their interest in exploring the world where they may not have the opportunity to visit in real life, such as the nature and wild life. TV is not only an educational source, but is also a recreational activity. It can help enrich their after class activities. For example, children are always excited to watch cartoons and they would experience the adventure together with the characters in the show. The positive effects would be enlarged if children are able to share their TV time with their parents or peers, because they would have topics in common and more communication can be followed.

In general, I’d like to conclude that whether TV is good or bad is determined by how parents manage it. If parents limit TV hours and designate some educational and interesting programs and they keep their children accompanied, healthy viewing habit would be established and positive effects would be maximized. Otherwise, watching TV can be a worrying situation.
